Once upon a time there was a group of monks who moved into the inner city of a large metropolitan area. They did not feed the hungry, clothe the homeless, or fight for social justice. They simply prayed.
Over time the neighborhood significantly improved. Store owners began to open up shops. Homeowners began to take pride in their neighborhood and the economic well-being of the area progressed.
Curious, a local college decided to do a study. They wanted to know what was causing the improvement. After all, no government dollars had been spent. No politician had come to rally for progress. The police hadn’t come to round up the drug dealers and prostitutes. The study’s conclusion?
It was simply the presence of the monks, praying, that turned the neighborhood around.

THE ROLE OF FASTING AND PRAYER
“… Amen, I say to you if you have the faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting”.
Matthew 17:20
Fasting, traditionally, has meant giving up all forms of food for a period of time. But fasting today can look different for different people. Some people are not able to give up all food for health reasons (typically due to blood sugar balance issues) but can still fast in a very powerful and meaningful way. When you choose to fast you are making a pact with God to experience sacrificial giving for a greater good. There are many ways to fast. When giving up all food is not an option, consider giving up all carbohydrates and/or all forms of sugar or soda, etc. Another option is to give up snacking or eating between meals. Fasting simply needs to be intentional and sacrificial. You will know what is most meaningful to you. Fasting is your gift to God. How you fast is ultimately between you and Him.
While you are fasting it is helpful to share what you are doing and experiencing with someone you trust. Connection with others brings comfort to the soul. When you share your experiences you often increase the momentum of your act and your love for God.
Will you fast with us each Wednesday for the vibrant growth of the Diocese of Rochester?
